What Size Wall Art Goes Above a Crib

Aug 23, 2026
A minimal Japandi nursery with a light oak crib and empty wall space above it

A standard crib is about 54 inches wide. That one number decides most of this question, and it's the number to start from — not the size of your wall.

Start with your crib, not your wall

The usual advice is to size artwork against the wall it's going on. For a nursery, that's the wrong reference point. A nursery wall is often mostly empty, and art sized against empty wall ends up far too large and slightly untethered.

Size it against the crib instead. The rule of thumb used by most decorators is that artwork above a piece of furniture should span roughly two thirds of that furniture's width, give or take.

For a 54-inch crib, two thirds is about 36 inches. That's your target width — whether you get there with one piece or several.

A few things that shift the number:

  • A smaller crib or a mini crib — measure yours rather than assuming 54"
  • A dresser instead of a crib — dressers are usually a similar width, so the same maths applies
  • A very small room — err smaller. A large piece in a tight room makes the room feel tighter
  • High or vaulted ceilings — you can go larger, but go taller rather than wider

One large print above the crib

The simplest option, and the one that suits a minimal room best.

Our 24×36" is the size that works here. At 24 inches wide it sits comfortably inside the crib's footprint, and at 36 inches tall it fills vertical space without needing a second piece.

If 24×36" feels like too much for your room, 16×24" also works above a crib — it reads as a smaller, quieter accent rather than a focal point. That's a legitimate choice, not a compromise, especially if there's already something visually strong in the room like wallpaper or a patterned rug.

What doesn't work: a 12×18" print alone above a 54-inch crib. At 12 inches wide against 54 inches of furniture, it looks stranded. Save that size for a narrow wall, a shelf, or a group.

Two prints side by side

A pair reads as one unit, so size them together.

Two 16×24" prints hung with about 2–3 inches between them span roughly 34 inches total. That lands almost exactly on the 36-inch target for a standard crib — this is the combination we'd suggest if you like symmetry.

Two 12×18" prints span about 26 inches with a gap. That works above a mini crib or a narrow dresser, but reads small above a full-size crib.

Keep the gap tight. Prints hung too far apart stop being a pair and start being two separate things that happen to be near each other.

A set of three

Three prints is the arrangement most people picture when they think of nursery art, and it's the one that gives you the most control over the total width.

Three framed neutral nursery prints hung in a row above a light oak crib

Three 12×18" prints with 2-inch gaps span about 40 inches. Slightly wider than the 36-inch target, which is fine — a set can extend a little past two thirds without looking off.

Three 16×24" prints span about 52 inches with gaps. That's nearly the full width of the crib. It works in a larger room with a tall wall, and it makes a strong statement, but it needs the space to carry it.

Two things to get right with a set of three:

  • Treat the group as one piece. Centre the whole arrangement over the crib, not each print individually
  • Keep the gaps equal. Uneven spacing is the single most common thing that makes a gallery wall look accidental

We've written a longer piece on building a gallery wall above a crib if you want to go further than three in a row.

Small nursery, low ceiling, or a window in the way

Real rooms rarely offer a clean rectangle of wall.

Low ceilings. Go wider rather than taller. Two 16×24" prints side by side sit lower on the wall than one 24×36", and won't crowd the ceiling.

A window or door beside the crib. Don't centre the art on the crib if that pushes it awkwardly close to the frame of the window. Centring it on the available wall instead usually looks more settled, even though it's technically off-centre to the crib.

A very small room. One 16×24" is plenty. Resist the urge to fill space — empty wall is part of what makes a small room feel calm rather than cluttered.

Crib against a corner. A single vertical print works better than a horizontal arrangement, because it doesn't fight the corner.

Why we only make three sizes

We print in 12×18", 16×24" and 24×36" — all 2:3 ratio, and nothing else.

That's a deliberate limit. Three sizes cover every arrangement above a standard crib, and they're all standard frame sizes you can buy off the shelf. Adding more sizes would mean more of them falling outside what's easy to frame, and framing is where most people get stuck.

If you're not sure which frame to buy, our guide to what frames fit these sizes has the specifics, including the metric sizes that look right but aren't.

A quick note before you drill

Whatever size you land on, tape paper cut to that size on the wall first and live with it for a day. It costs nothing and it's the only reliable way to know whether the proportion is right in your actual room, with your actual light.

We cover exact hanging heights in how high to hang nursery wall art.
