Most art in most homes is hung too high. It's the single most common mistake, and it's an easy one to make — you stand back, see a big empty wall, and instinctively try to fill the middle of it.
There's a simple number that fixes this.
The 57-inch rule, and why it works
Hang artwork so that its centre sits about 57 to 60 inches from the floor.
That range is roughly average adult eye level. It's the height galleries and museums use, and it's why gallery walls feel settled in a way that home walls often don't.
Note what the rule measures: the centre of the piece, not the top and not the hook. For a 24×36" print, the centre is 18 inches down from the top edge — so the top of the frame lands around 75–78 inches from the floor.
The reason people get this wrong is that they centre the artwork in the empty space between the furniture and the ceiling. That's a different calculation, and it almost always puts the piece too high, leaving a gap of blank wall that visually disconnects the art from everything below it.
The second rule: stay connected to the furniture
Eye level is the anchor, but artwork also needs to relate to whatever sits beneath it. If there's a wide band of empty wall between a dresser and the print above it, the two stop reading as a group.
Leave 6 to 10 inches between the top of the furniture and the bottom of the frame.
To be precise about what that measures: from the surface of the furniture up to the bottom edge of the frame. Not to the centre of the artwork, and not from the top of a lamp or a basket sitting on the dresser.
When the two rules conflict — and above tall furniture they sometimes do — the furniture rule wins. Art that sits slightly below eye level but connected to the dresser looks right. Art at perfect eye level but floating a foot above it doesn't.
Above a crib
Cribs are lower than they look, usually around 35 inches at the top rail. That leaves a lot of wall.
Apply eye level first: centre of the artwork at 57–60 inches. For a 24×36" print, that puts the bottom edge roughly 39–42 inches from the floor — comfortably above the crib rail, with a few inches of clearance.

Above a dresser or changing table
Dressers usually sit higher than cribs, often 32–36 inches, and you'll be standing right in front of one regularly.
Here the furniture rule tends to lead. Measure 6 to 10 inches up from the dresser surface, put the bottom of the frame there, and let the artwork land where it lands — usually a touch below strict eye level, which is fine and often looks better.
One thing to check afterwards: whatever sits on the dresser. A lamp, a basket, a nappy caddy. Once the artwork is up, step back and make sure nothing tall is cutting across the bottom of the frame. If it is, you either need a lower lamp or a higher hang — and at that point the 6-to-10 rule gives way to whatever clears the object.
Above a glider or nursery chair
The lowest of the three, because you'll mostly see this wall while sitting.
Leave 8 to 10 inches above the back of the chair. Then check it from the chair itself — sit down and look up. If the artwork disappears from view or feels like it's looming, adjust.
This is the one spot in a nursery where the art is genuinely seen at close range, often in the middle of the night. It's worth getting the height right rather than defaulting to the standard.
Hanging a group
Treat the entire arrangement as one piece. Find the centre of the whole group — not of any individual print — and put that at 57–60 inches.
Keep the gaps between prints equal, and keep them tight: 2 to 3 inches for prints of this size. Uneven or overly generous spacing is what makes a group look accidental.

The paper trick, before you drill
Cut paper to the size of your print — or use the wrapping the print arrived in — and tape it to the wall at the height you've calculated.
Then leave it there for a day.
Look at it in morning light and in evening light. Look at it from the doorway and from the chair. This takes ten minutes and it's the only thing that reliably catches a mistake before it becomes a hole in the wall.
If you're hanging a group, tape up all the pieces and adjust the spacing on the wall rather than working it out on paper. Groups almost never end up exactly where the maths said they would.
A note on what you hang with
Heavier frames need proper fixings — a wall anchor or a stud, not a picture hook pushed into plasterboard. This matters more in a nursery than elsewhere in the house, because of what's underneath.
Lighter frames, and frames with acrylic instead of glass, are easier to fix securely and less consequential if something does come loose. It's one of the reasons we suggest keeping frames simple.
